The Aqara Power Plug H2 UK can join a smart home through Matter over Thread or through Aqara Zigbee. Both modes provide smart control, but they use different network infrastructure and do not expose every advanced function in the same place.

One product provides two connection modes
The Singapore product is the white Aqara Power Plug H2 UK, model SP-P07D, with a configurable RGB status ring. Thread and Zigbee are modes selected during commissioning; they are not separate products, colours or variants.
Only one radio mode operates at a time. In Thread mode, the plug joins a Thread mesh and communicates with a Matter controller. In Zigbee mode, it joins an Aqara Zigbee hub. The selected mode therefore determines which controller owns the device, which mesh the plug extends and where its advanced settings are managed.
Choose the route before building rooms, names and automations. Moving between Thread and Zigbee should be treated as a fresh commissioning task because the device joins a different network and controller. Do not assume that platform rooms or automations will migrate with it.
Thread connects the plug directly to a Matter ecosystem
Matter over Thread is the direct route into a compatible household platform. The plug needs a Thread-enabled Matter controller for that ecosystem; in practical terms, the installation also needs a Thread Border Router that connects the Thread mesh to the home IP network. One device may perform both roles, but the controller and border-router functions are technically distinct.
This route suits a home already centred on Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, SmartThings or another compatible Matter platform. The Aqara hub is not required for the Thread connection. The destination platform becomes the main place for on/off control, rooms, household sharing and the automations it supports.
Matter compatibility does not guarantee identical functions in every app. Platforms differ in the device features, energy data and automation triggers they expose. Confirm the exact function in the intended ecosystem rather than treating the Matter logo as a promise that every Aqara Home setting will appear there.

Zigbee unlocks the complete Aqara Home route
Zigbee mode pairs the plug to a compatible Aqara Zigbee hub. Aqara Home then manages the detailed device settings and automations. A suitable Aqara hub can also bridge supported functions into Matter, allowing the plug to appear in a third-party ecosystem while remaining a Zigbee device on the Aqara side.
Aqara documents several functions that require Zigbee mode and an Aqara hub: configurable load limits, using the indicator light in Aqara automations, subtle indicator behaviour, the full colour-coded energy feedback suite and complete button protection through Accidental Removal Protection. Power readings can also be used as Aqara automation triggers—for example, detecting when a washing machine drops below a defined consumption level.
Choose Zigbee when those manufacturer-specific controls are important, when the home already has a well-positioned Aqara hub, or when most related sensors and automations will be managed in Aqara Home. Zigbee is not a lesser compatibility route: the hub can bridge supported devices to Matter while preserving the richer Aqara configuration layer.
Compare the required equipment and available controls
The practical difference is easier to see as a dependency map. Thread removes the Aqara-hub requirement but does not remove the need for a controller. Zigbee adds the Aqara hub and makes Aqara Home the detailed configuration layer.
Check the equipment already present before choosing. A smart speaker or display is not automatically a Thread Border Router, and a Thread Border Router is not automatically the Matter controller for every ecosystem. Likewise, an older Aqara hub may coordinate Zigbee products without supporting every newer Matter-bridging role.

Energy monitoring is useful only where the data is exposed
The H2 UK measures real-time power and records daily and monthly consumption for supported views. Aqara also describes power changes as automation triggers. This makes the plug more useful than a remote on/off switch: consumption can reveal when an appliance has started, stopped or remained in standby.
Do not assume that every Matter app presents the same history or permits power values to trigger automations. Matter defines common device behaviour, but platform implementations and supported device features still vary. If detailed Aqara charts, power thresholds or energy-based Aqara automations are central to the use case, Zigbee mode through an Aqara hub is the safer documented route.
Measure before automating. Record the appliance at idle, during normal operation and at the point that indicates completion. A washing machine may briefly fall to a low reading several times during a cycle, so a useful completion rule normally combines a wattage threshold with a duration instead of reacting to one instant.

The plug extends only the network it has joined
Because the H2 UK is mains-powered, it can act as a router node in the selected Thread or Zigbee mesh. This may help nearby devices reach the rest of that network, particularly where walls or distance weaken a direct radio path.
It does not extend Thread and Zigbee at the same time. In Thread mode it participates in the Thread mesh; in Zigbee mode it participates in the Aqara Zigbee mesh. It is also not a Thread Border Router, a Wi-Fi router or an Aqara hub. Those devices perform different network roles.
Repeater placement should still follow the actual route through the home. A plug behind dense cabinetry or at the edge of coverage may be less useful than one in an open, intermediate location. Build the network around permanent, sensible outlet positions rather than adding powered devices at random.
Choose appliances that restart safely when power returns
A smart plug controls electricity at the socket. It cannot press an appliance's electronic start button or change an internal programme. A lamp with a physical switch may resume immediately when power returns, while a television, coffee machine or air purifier may remain in standby or require a manual command.
Test the appliance by switching it on, disconnecting power briefly and restoring power while supervised. If it returns to the intended safe state, scheduled or remote switching may be practical. If it remains off, enters an unexpected mode or requires a button press, use the plug for monitoring rather than assuming it can start the appliance.
Some equipment should not be left to start unattended even if it technically resumes after power restoration. Heating, cooking, motorised and high-load appliances require particular caution. Follow the appliance manufacturer's instructions and keep a safe manual control path.

The RGB status ring is a built-in feature
The configurable RGB ring is part of the SP-P07D product; it is not an optional colour variant. It can provide status feedback, indicate power-use levels and act as a visual signal. Aqara also exposes the RGB light independently through Matter as an adjustable light.
The deeper Aqara controls depend on Zigbee mode and a compatible Aqara hub. These include using the indicator as an Aqara automation action, synchronising or reversing its relationship to the socket state, switching it off for a dark room and using the full colour-coded energy feedback functions.
Treat the ring as a secondary indicator rather than the only warning channel for an important event. A phone notification, audible alert or physical control may be more appropriate when a person must respond.

Keep every connected load within 13A and 3250W
The Singapore H2 UK is rated for 230–250V AC, 50/60Hz, with a maximum load of 13A or 3250W. Check the rating plate of the connected appliance and keep the full load within both limits. Do not use an adaptor or extension arrangement to combine several appliances beyond the plug's rating.
The product includes overload and overheating shutoff, with Aqara specifying an over-temperature cutoff at 80°C. These protections are safeguards, not permission to exceed the rating or operate unsuitable equipment unattended. Replace damaged sockets, plugs or cables and stop using any connection that becomes loose, discoloured or abnormally warm.
Charging protection can switch the outlet off after power remains below 3W for 30 minutes. That can suit some chargers, but the threshold and timing should be tested with the actual device. A low-power appliance may fall below 3W during normal operation and be cut off unexpectedly.
Choose the mode around the system you will maintain
Neither mode is universally better. Thread reduces dependence on an Aqara hub and fits a Matter-first home. Zigbee provides the clearest route to Aqara's complete documented feature set. The right choice is the one that places control, automation and maintenance in the system the household already understands.
- Choose Thread for a direct Matter route when the intended ecosystem already has a suitable controller and Thread Border Router.
- Choose Zigbee when Aqara Home owns the detailed automations, energy rules, load settings and RGB behaviour.
- Use Zigbee with Matter bridging when the household wants Aqara-specific controls and a broader third-party interface.
- Confirm the exact functions exposed by Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, Home Assistant or another Matter platform before depending on them.
- Document the selected mode, controller, device name and important automations so future troubleshooting starts with the correct network.
