Klingspor SMT abrasive mop discs have replaced the grinding disc in many surface-finishing jobs.
The cloth grinding flaps are arranged radially in a fan shape, so the disc keeps exposing fresh grit as it wears.
Klingspor abrasive mop discs are made of zirconia alumina, ceramic, or aluminium oxide coated flaps fastened to glass fibre-reinforced or plastic backing plates. The evenly spaced flaps give high flexibility, consistently high grinding performance and low vibration.

SMT is short for the German word for abrasive mop disc: Schleifmopteller.

Professional class for aggressive grinding, with a high stock-removal rate and long service life.
How a mop disc is built
A mop disc has three components, each chosen for the intended application.
1. Grinding flaps (blue in diagram)
Klingspor developed special coated abrasives for its mop discs. They are made for high-speed angle grinders, up to the operating speed marked on the disc, and give strong grinding performance and long service life.
2. Backing plate (grey in diagram)
Klingspor makes mop discs on two backing plate types: glass fibre, the most common on the market, and plastic.
3. Glue (red in diagram)
The adhesive joins the grinding flaps to the backing plate and stops them coming off in proper use. Its strength goes well beyond the oSa guidelines and the EN 13743 safety standard.
Convex or flat
A convex mop disc grinds a narrower strip than a flat one, so it removes more stock per unit of time. Use convex discs on edges and weld seams. Use flat discs for flat and surface grinding.

Rated to 80 m/s
The abrasives are engineered for high-speed angle grinders (80 m/s) and suit a wide range of applications. The flap arrangement gives strong grinding performance, long service life and full use of the disc right down to the end.
Consistent removal
The cloth flaps are coated with zirconia alumina, ceramic or aluminium oxide and spaced evenly on the backing plate. The cloth-reinforced backing keeps exposing fresh grit, so removal stays consistent from start to finish.
Flap bond strength
The bond between the backing plate and the grinding flaps has a break resistance well above the oSa and EN 13743 requirements.
Glass-fibre backing
SMT backing plates are glass fibre or glass-fibre reinforced plastic. They are very hard-wearing and transfer power efficiently to the workpiece.
