One-component polyurethane (PU) foam is a moisture-curing foam that fills, insulates and seals gaps in construction. Soudal is one of the world’s largest PU foam makers, producing over 60 million cans a year.
Foam is not a joint sealant. Around a window or door frame it fills and insulates the joint, and a sealant, tape or trim covers it on the exposed faces.
Where it’s used
- Filling gaps around window and door frames
- Filling service penetrations
- Thermal and acoustic insulation in joints and cavities
- Mounting and bonding, with foams made for that job
Good perimeter foam matters. A double-glazed window loses much of its benefit if the joint around it is packed with rock wool or cement, which leaves a cold or heat bridge.
Choosing a foam
Look at how it’s dispensed (straw or gun), expansion, yield, curing conditions and the substrates it will touch. Fire-rated foams carry their rating only in the tested joint configuration.
Application and safety
Protect adjacent finishes, keep the area ventilated and wear gloves and eye protection. Gun-grade foams need a foam gun and gun cleaner.
