Window-to-wall joints need a specified filling and sealing system. Newspaper and other absorbent packing materials do not provide controlled insulation, air sealing, water resistance or fire performance and should not be used as joint fillers.
Common joint components
A window-perimeter detail may use polyurethane foam or another specified insulation material within the joint, together with backing material, sealant, membranes or flashings at the exposed faces. Mortar or grout may be used only where it forms part of the designed detail and is compatible with the frame and surrounding construction.
Selection factors
- Joint width, depth and expected movement.
- Frame, wall and coating materials.
- Air, water, acoustic, thermal and fire requirements.
- Interior and exterior exposure conditions.
- Required primers, backing materials, membranes and curing time.
